Smile What gifts to bring to Morocco ?

I received this email from Ms. Theresa asking what type of gifts is she allowed to bring to Morocco and what she's not allowed to.

Hi I am planning on making a trip to Casablanca in March of 2009. I will be staying with a Moroccan family while I am there. I want to bring them gifts from the USA but I have no idea what will or will not pass through customs in the airport when I arrive in Morocco. I dont want to bring items that will be confiscated by the customs officers at the airport.

Any suggestions would be appreciated so much. Especially if you can tell me where I can get a copy of a list of items that will pass customs.

Thank you,

Theresa*
Hi Theresa -
Thank you for your email and interest in visiting Morocco
As a Moroccan living in the USA. I visit home almost every year. From my own experience you can bring any gifts you want as long as they aren't harmful or very precious. I don't see any problem with bringing casual gifts like clothes, food, electronics...
Please find the official list from the Moroccan customs of all the restricted items.

it's in French but I can help you translating it. It's mainly prohibiting firearms, chemicals, antiques and collectibles. you can also ask any questions or concerns directly the customs authority by email to the Moroccan customs.

Hope this helps, Let me know if you need further assistance.

Thank you so much for your answer to my question. I was mainly worried because it was food I wanted to bring into the country and I know that some countries frown on entering with food from other places.

Your information was a big help but to let you know I have tried to contact the Moroccan embassy here in the USA but didnt get an answer.

What I love most about travelling is the first hand knowledge of other cultures. There is something unique about discovering the traditions, the way of life, the arts & crafts and especially the food. All Countries are fascinating in their own way; however there are places in the world that are richer than others in a way of traditions and history. Morocco is one of them. Not only Morocco sprouts history from every corner with its beautiful architecture and the Medina, which has kept the unspoilt status of old city and seems to guard its hidden secrets, but the traditions are just as evident in everyday life. You just need to visit one of the famous Moroccan markets to see the abundance of their arts and crafts, and if you are lucky enough you might even barter yourself a deal and take home one of the renowned Moroccan rugs or a precious handmade piece of silver jewellery.

Hello,
On a recent trip to Morocco, I became fascinated with the Arabic language and culture. Determined to make the most of my travels, as I swayed, precariously perched atop the hump of my dromedary on the edge of the Sahara desert, I had lots of time to practice twirling my rrrr's. This brought warm smiles from the Bedouin camel drivers and wonderful expressions of hospitality. I could command my dromedary to "hurry up" (YA-LA, YA-LA) and say "God Bless You" when someone sneezed (ALLAH-HAM-DO-LE-LE-LA). Knowing how to say words of common courtesy really made a difference in my travels. Here are a few "Do's and Don'ts" of the Arab world from an American prospective
