May 21 (Bloomberg) -- Renault SA, France’s second-largest carmaker, has assured Morocco that its plan to build a car plant in Tangiers with its Japanese affiliate Nissan Motor Co. will still go ahead despite delays, Moroccan Trade, Industry and New Technologies Minister Ahmed Chami said.
“It’s still on,” Chami said in an interview at his office in Rabat today. “They delayed the project for six month, but it’s nothing in my view. That’s still on track with a six month delay. They are keeping the project.”
Renault and Nissan have said they will spend 1 billion euros ($1.4 billion) on the factory. About 90 percent of the vehicles will be exported and production will be lifted to 400,000 vehicles in the future.
Construction of the plant was delayed by six months, Renault said in February.
