Default Health

The Moroccan health system is generally well-developed and well-run in the cities, while inhabitants in the countryside often have long distances to the nearest doctor or hospital. The cities also have private hospitals, offering high-quality services.

Morocco had according to 1997 figures one doctor for every 2,174 inhabitant, and 1 hospital bed for every 1,020 inhabitant.

Life expectancy: 71.5 years. Female 74.0, male 69.2
Population growth: 1.7%.
Fertility rate: 3 children/woman.
Infant mortality rate: 4.7%.

Preparing for a trip in February from US to Fez, Atlas Mountains and Marrakech. The CDC site recommends we get Hepatitis A, B and typhoid vaccines. Is this typical?
Thanks!

it's recommended, I personally think that there's no need for jabs, The tap water in the cities is safe to drink, but mineral water is recommended.

Essential: Tetanus and polio
Strong recommendation: Hepatitis A
Recommended: Typhoid, Diptheria, TB, Hepatitis B, Rabies

The vaccinations are only suggested, not mandatory (you won't be turned away if you don't have them). They are similar to those needed for other countries, so if you plan to travel a lot it's a good idea. Some of these injections can be combined, e.g. Hep-A/Typhoid, Diptheria/Tetanus/Polio. You would need a booster for Hep-A six months down the line. Then a typhoid revaccination after three years, the others after ten years. Malaria is practically eliminated, but avoid mosquito bites by using cream/nets.

I dont think the shots are needed but its up to your own comfort level. Now Abdel mentions the water in the cities is fine however I warn against it. Your body as a foreigner is not use to the local water anywhere you travel. That doesnt mean that Moroccan water is not good its just that your body is not use to it. I suggest bottled water, soda or beer/wine as your drink. It sucks being sick for days while on an awesome vacation. I have had a few people visit me in Morocco and they got sick from drinking local water in a large city. So just use caution.

I would agree with that, it's more often or not the difference in mineral content that causes sickness, not the fact that the water is unclean in any way. As you say why risk spoiling a good trip. Bottled water is very cheap anyway.

I've never had the injections other than what is normally given as matter of course i:e polio, tetanus etc.
Mozzies can be a nuisance for me they seem to seek me out. I've tried various repellents over the years and one of the best, for me anyway, is "Skin so Soft" dry oil body spray. It's not marketed as an insect reppellent, but it seems to do the job the same. Plus the benefit of its smelling nicer.
