The international conference on "Islam and Muslims in the media" kicked off in Casablanca, Morocco on 14 February.
According to the official Moroccan new agency, MAP, the conference is being held by the Moroccan Association of Mohamadiah Ulama on the sidelines of the 15th Casablanca international book exhibition.
Nour-ud-Din Miladi, head of research center of North Hampton University's department for Arab-Islamic studies, Hemad Basuni, head of Cairo University's research center, Nour-ud-Din Miftah, director of Al-Ayam daily, Ahmad Ibadi secretary general of the Association of Mohamadiah Ulama, Moroccan scholars, and a number of Muslim scholars are participating in the two-day event.
Portrayal of Islam and Muslims in Western media and the media's role in the presentation of authentic Islam are among the main themes of the conference.
At the opening of the conference, the Moroccan Association of Mohamadiah Ulama issued a statement noting that after the September 11, 2001 incidents, a number of Western media have attempted to equate Islam with terrorism, and present a false and distorted image of Islam, Muslims and Arabs.
According to research studies conducted in 2007 by research centers in Moroccan universities, nearly 80 percent of the Western media, particularly in Germany, present a distorted image of Islam and Muslims, the statement read.
The association expressed concern over the biased western position vis-à-vis Muslims and urged Islamic world's media to try to provide the world with accurate information on the principles and teachings of Islam.
