In the madhouse that is sometimes Rabat, the Chellah provides a peaceful oasis, a quiet escape. Once an ancient Roman city, today it is a series of crumbling ruins, although the surrounding earthen walls are relatively intact. In between the rambling gardens and blocks of stone from Roman columns and buildings, are the remains of an Islamic complex - minaret from the mosque, tombs and some zellij (tiled mosaics). See students who come to study, couples who visit for a quiet chat, or families who come to see the eels, or women who come to feed them. The complex is also home to many storks who clacking beaks sometimes disturb the quiet as they sit atop nest on any high point. Watch out for the many cats that also call the Chellah home.
Entry is 10 dirham and the Chellah is open from 9am to 5.30pm. Guides are available at the entrance for an extra fee (bargain hard).
