Default Marrakech to Fes and bit's in between.

We decided due to the fact our time was limited to go with the same tour operator we had previously used, Roughtours. This is a sure way of getting to the places you wish to see safely and also aquiring a good deal of local knowledge along the way. On our last trip we spent time in Marrakech and did a tour of the city so this time as Fes was our city of choice we set off early next morning. Stopping off on the way at the Cascades d'Ouzoud, where we enjoyed lunch overlooking the cascades. The view from the top is awesome as is the view from the bottom but be prepared for the steep walk down...and of course back up. Worth it though and if you've a mind there are rafts offering short trips up close to the waterfall.

From there we continued to Azrou where we spent the night at the Hotel Panoramic. Up in the hills and seemed to be a good base for walkers. The rooms were compact but comfortable and the restaurant adequate. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We continued next morning on our journey to Fes.

Roughtours had arranged a local guide to show us around the Medina. Having a local guide I think is essential if you want to get the best out of your experience...without one I think we may still be there lost among the labyrinthine alleys that make up the Medina. We were met by Farrida, who knew Fes as only a local could do. We had a very interesting visit not only seeing all the attractions we had wished to, the Tannery being top of our list but also learnt a great deal of the history of Fes, the traditions, culture and future aspirations. We were then handed back to Youssef our driver who then took us to our Riad. Riad Ahlam, first class rooms, very comfortable and spacious. Youssef collected us at an arranged time and took us out for our evening meal. We ate at Restaurant Dar Hatim, 19 Derb Ezaouia Fandak lihoudi - fes Medina. I give the address because if you find yourself in Fes and miss out on this gem then you are truely missing out. It's a family run restaurant, the food is some of the best authentic moroccan cuisine I've had in Morocco. If you feel you will never find the place yourself then give them a ring and the owner will come and collect you from your hotel or riad and return you afterwards.

From Fes we set out through the Atlas mountains, at this point I feel I should mention Youssef's driving skills, which are amazing. Plus his non stop enthusiam for his country, his knowledge and his quirky sense of humour makes even the longest drive a pleasure rather than a chore. Always knows the best place to stop for photos etc. We continued onto Rissani and stopped at the village of Hi Ramilia, we stopped overnight at the Aghabalou Auberge. The most quiet of places and the most amazing night sky. The rooms simply furnished were on suite with good hot showers quite an unexpected luxury out in the middle of nowhere. After a delicious breakfast we set out for Merzouga.

Our goal to climb the top of Erg Chebbie...sadly didn't quite get to the top...so may have to go back again in the future for another attempt. Then back to Marrakech stopping at Boummalne du Dades, stayed overnight at the Xaluca Dades, 4* luxury all the way lovely rooms and food. Swimming pool, Spa and Hammam should you feel the need to indulge in a bit of pampering.

For us this has proved a winning formula for getting to know Morocco. Roughtours and it's staff have proved reliable friends time again and I'm sure we would not have had the great Moroccan experiences we have had without their imput. Their knowledge and pride in their moroccan berber history ensures that we got the best of our trip. Now to start planning the next one....
