Promoting Amazigh language... Promoting Amazigh language, a large-scale national project open to cultural globalisation, official
Paris - Chairman of the Royal Institute of the Amazigh Culture (IRCAM), Ahmed Boukouss, said, Friday in Paris, that the promotion of the Amazigh language in Morocco is a large-scale project open to cultural and linguistic globalisation.
Boukouss, who was addressing a round table on "Languages Matter for Communities: The Way Forward," organized by UNESCO, said this endeavour falls within the scope of a new cultural policy, notably in the areas of education and media.
"This policy has yielded extremely important results so much so that we can talk without exaggerating of a Moroccan model" in this respect, recalling that the teaching of the Amazigh language was launched in 2003, two years following the creation of IRCAM, covering the six years of the primary education, with courses at three universities.
The official recalled that since 2004, following the signing of an agreement between the Culture Ministry, the National Company of Radio and Television (SNRT) and IRCAM, the two TV channels broadcast programmes in the Amazigh language, with an Amazigh-language channel to be launched in the coming months.
The round table was organized on the eve of UNESCO’s celebration of the International Mother Language Day, celebrated on February 21.
The Day aims at promoting cultural and linguistic diversity as well as multilingualism.
