Default How is the economy crisis in the west affecting Morocco?

I am trying to get a handle on how the economic downturn is affecting Morocco? Especially I am expecting those who are currently living in Morocco to give us more insight. I heard that rain has been good to Morocco in 2008. But because the west is tightening its belt, Morocco cannot expect a profitable number of tourists. Does this mean that an agricultural well-being can balance out mediocre tourism?

What and who is broke in Morocco?

share your thoughts.

I'm sure it's affecting tourism mainly but with the good rain falls, I think the economy is doing just fine. actually one of the fewest in this recession. car sales are increasing and unemployment is decreasing.

Morocco foresees 6.6% economic growth in 2009 first quarter

2009-01-21

Morocco's economy is expected to achieve 6.6% growth in the first quarter of 2009, up from 4.8% in the last four months of 2008, based on above-average agricultural prospects, MAP quoted the High Commissioner of Planning (HCP) as saying on Tuesday (January 20th). Last year's rainfall more than doubled, benefitting all agricultural regions and increasing the water stored in dams. Given these conditions, agricultural value could increase by 22.2%, contributing 2.9% to national economic growth, HCP said.

I Have freinds with shops in Tangiers and they are realy struggling through lack of tourists. Mainly through the crisis but also due to the ridiculous prices of the ferrys.
I live in Tarifa in Spain which is only 20klm across the straits to Tangiers. We get a lot of tourists who would love to visit Tangiers and Morocco, but a lot are put off by the high prices.

Yes that's an issue since the ferries are owned and operated by few companies. we should write a petition to the minister of tourism in Morocco. maybe they could look at it and resolve it.

I Think the owners of FRS are from Norway I doubt that they'd be interested in anything but profit.
But something needs doing it's not just tourism, the cost is keeping Moroccan families apart aswell.

It's about time that the Moroccan government get together to plan a strategy before it's too late and costly.
